An abortion increases the probability of giving birth prematurely in a subsequent pregnancy.
A recent study shows that women who have had an abortion have almost twice the chance of later giving birth to a premature infant.
These women have a 70% greater chance of giving birth prior to the twenty eighth week of pregnancy. In addition, they have a 40% probability of giving birth before the thirty third week of pregnancy.
The study shows that a previous abortion increases such causes of premature delivery as improper positioning of the fetus and placenta in the uterus and premature contractions.
In addition, the study shows that abortion can cause damage to the cervix that can result in premature delivery in subsequent pregnancies.
The study was conducted on 2,873 pregnancies and published in the British Medical Journal, "Obstetrics and Gynecology."
